Who was Mary Wilson?
Hey Crochet Cousins,
Some of you may or may not know but theatre was my first love! It has been about two years since my last theater production, when I was in high school, I had the amazing opportunity to perform as Mary Wilson. Wilson, was one of the founding members of The Supremes, alongside Diana Ross and the late Florence Chapman-Ballard.
It breaks my heart to know that at the age of 75, this amazing vocalist is no longer with us. She was part of the best-charting female group in the US! She was more than just a member of one of the best-selling group in the world! Yes, in the world!
Her best selling book, Dreamgirl: My Life as a Supreme. Released in 1986, it was a memoir. Although it didn’t always paint a good picture for her former singing partners. Through this memoir, Wilson was able to tell her version of the story, and share her memories straight with no chaser. An interesting fact, Wilson chose music over college. Which was obviously the right decision. Because one year before she graduated high school, she was signed to Motown Records.
Although her marriage was short, she had 2 sons and adopted a 3rd. Tragically, she was in a car accident with her son Raphael who succumb to injuries in 1994. He was just 14 years old. Wilson walked away with bumps, bruises and a broken heart that could never be repaired.
We hear the Supremes music almost everyday. It's in commercials, movies and it is still played on the radio today. She was a pioneer.
Wilson, fought to pass the Truth in Music legislation, this law aims to protect the trademark of musical recording artists.
Her skills, passion, talent and love for music showed through her success.
In the past she has released solo music, but it did not receive the credit that it deserve.
Just 2 days ago Wilson announced she was releasing new solo music. This is just a reminder that we are here for only a season. I'm trying to do all I can to leave a legacy behind. Think about that thing that you said you would do if you had time. The world has(d) completely shut down and you still haven't made time. What are you waiting for?
Rest in the arms of our father Mary Wilson. May you hear the words, "Well done thy good and faithful servant."
